Singer Kate McCandless (She Speaks in Tongues) joined with Kirk Rawlings, Drew Ryan, and Doug Malone of the band Courtesy for a unique collaborative performance bridging lo-fi electronic and rock music.

Both She Speaks in Tongues and Courtesy create big, atmospheric pieces through the use of samples or looping. In this collaboration, the members of Courtesy provided a stripped-down backdrop for McCandless and her work. For her part, McCandless provided raw vocal energy to Courtesy as they performed a selection of their songs.

Speaking after the show, the artists discussed how collaboration sparks new ideas and disputed the resistance to sampling in some of the music world. McCandless said for her the act of sampling can even be a feminist response to how the works of women have been appropriated in the past.

“In a way it’s my way of reclaiming agency that’s been denied or stolen, so it’s symbolic for me,” she said.
